4. Detergent drawer
Front view, left to right. Highlighted compartments are the ones the machine takes detergent from on this programme.
The drawer slides out and has three compartments: prewash (symbol with one bar), main wash and soaking (symbol with two bars), flower: fabric softener, shape-retaining additives, liquid starch (with a siphon; watch the MAX mark). The order of the compartments left to right is not described in the text and is assumed from the usual Miele layout. Use about 1/4 of the dose for prewash. Clean the siphon thoroughly, especially after liquid starch.
Tap a row to set that programme on the panel.
| No. | Programme | Temp. | Spin | Drawer | Time | End |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 95 | Cotton/Linen 95 °C Cotton, linen and mixed fabrics. Using 60 °C instead saves 35-45% of energy; 60 °C with Soak is usually enough for heavy soiling. For test institutes: load 3 kg with the Short function. |
up to 95 °C | up to 1200 | Prewash, Main wash, including soaking, Softener, shape-retaining additives, liquid starch (with siphon) | ≈ 1 h 40 min estimate | by itself |

- Start button Start — The Start button starts the selected programme; its indicator blinks when a programme is selected and ready. A short rattling sound at the start is the drum position being locked.
- Button Short — The upper button steps through Soak, Prewash, Short or no selection. Short: for lightly soiled items without visible stains. The main wash is shortened; in Dark garments and Jeans 2 rinse cycles run instead of 3. Only one of the three upper-button functions can be selected at a time.
- Button Prewash — Prewash: for heavily soiled items (dust, sand). Put prewash powder in compartment I (about 1/4 of the total dose). Selected with the upper button instead of Soak and Short.
- Button Soak — Soak for heavily soiled items and items with organic stains (blood, grease, cocoa). Factory setting 2 hours; programmable from 30 minutes to 2 hours in 30-minute steps. The same detergent serves for soaking and the main wash, in compartment II.
- Button More water — Lower button: raises the water level in washing and rinsing; one of four settings can be chosen in the programmable functions. Recommended for very soft water and better rinsing.
- Spin knob Spin — The spin speed is set with the Spin button: press it until the indicator of the speed you want lights (1200, 900, 600, 400, No drain, No spin). It is one button and a column of indicators, not a knob; it is shown here as a conceptual dial and the angles are not real. "No drain": the laundry stays in the water after the last rinse, then start the spin or drain with the Lid button. "No spin": after rinsing the water is pumped out and crease protection runs. A speed higher than the programme allows cannot be selected.
- Lamp — The column of indicators to the right of the selector: Soak/Prewash, Wash, Rinse, End of rinse, Drain/Spin, Crease protection/End. Shows which stage is running. "Crease protection/End": the programme has finished.
- Lamp — "Check dosing" (too much foam or the inner lid is closed incorrectly), "Check drain" (drain obstructed), "Check fill" (no water) and (PC) - service indicator. See "Troubleshooting" in the manual.
- Power button On/Off — Switches the machine on and off or interrupts the running programme. A programme resumes from the interrupted point after switching back on.
- Button Lid — Press the Lid button to open the outer lid (the drum moves to the "lid on top" position). Laundry can be added or removed at any time after the start. The lid does not open if the solution is above 55 °C or the machine is in the Spin cycle.
- Programme knob programmes — The programme selector turns left and right. In position 0 (top) no programme is selected: the machine is off or ready for selection. Upper right is cotton (95, 60, 40, 30 °C), lower right synthetics (60, 40, 30) and delicates (40, 30, cold). Bottom centre: Extra rinse/Starching and Drain/Spin (dot marks). Lower left wool (cold, 30, 40), left silk 30, then Express, Jeans, Shirts, Dark garments, Automatic near the top. The temperature is part of the programme: there is no separate temperature knob, and the selector does not turn during the wash.
The "Crease protection/End" lamp is off or the Start indicator does not blink
- No power: check the plug and the fuse.
Manual, p. 33
Choosing "Drain/Spin" does not start it
- The "first start" steps were not done: run the first wash without laundry as described.
Manual, p. 33
"Check dosing" blinks fast and the programme does not start
- The inner lid is not closed: close the inner lid properly.
Manual, p. 33
The programme was interrupted, "Check drain" blinks
- The water drain is blocked: clean the drain filter and drain pump.
- The drain hose is laid too high (maximum drain height 1 m).
Manual, p. 34
The programme was interrupted, "Check fill" blinks
- The water supply is shut off: open the water tap.
- The filter in the inlet hose is blocked: clean it.
Manual, p. 34
"Check fill" and "Check drain" blink together
- The leak protection has reacted: call the service.
Manual, p. 34
The Soak/Prewash or Rinse indicator blinks
- A fault occurred: restart the programme; if it appears again, call the service.
Manual, p. 34
The wash runs but "Check dosing" blinks
- Too much foam formed: use less detergent next time and follow the pack.
Manual, p. 35
The selector was moved after the start, "Crease protection/End" blinks
- Turn the selector back to its original position.
Manual, p. 35
The machine is unstable during the spin
- It is not level: level it by turning the feet.
Manual, p. 36
Laundry is not spun well enough
- The spin speed is set too low: choose a higher one next time.
Manual, p. 36
A lot of detergent and additives remain in the drawer
- Insufficient water pressure: clean the filter in the water supply; press "More water" if needed.
- Powders combined with softening additives tend to cake: fill the drawer with detergent first, then the softening additive.
Manual, p. 36
Fabric softener is not rinsed out fully or too much water stays in the flower compartment
- The siphon is in the wrong position or blocked: clean the siphon.
Manual, p. 36
The drum did not stop in the "lid on top" position
- A large unbalance prevented automatic parking: turn the drum by hand to "lid on top" and in future load large and small items mixed.
Manual, p. 38
The outer lid does not open
- The machine is not connected to the mains or not switched on.
- A power failure: open the lid as described in the manual.
- The solution is hotter than 55 °C.
Manual, p. 38
Laundry is greyish with fatty particles
- The detergent dose was too small (laundry heavily soiled with grease): use more or liquid detergent; run Cotton/Linen 60 °C with liquid detergent but without laundry.
Manual, p. 37
White residue on dark items
- The detergent contains water-insoluble components (zeolites): brush off after drying; wash dark items with zeolite-free detergent.
Manual, p. 37

Washing at low temperatures and/or with liquid detergents can lead to germs and odours. To clean the drum and prevent odour, run a wash at 60 °C or higher with powder detergent once a month; clean the drum with a stainless steel cleaner.
Unplug before cleaning and never wash the machine with a jet of water. Wipe with a slightly damp cloth and mild detergent or soapy water, dry with a soft cloth. Do not use products with solvents, abrasives or universal cleaners.
Remove detergent residue regularly: pull out the drawer and wash it and the compartments in warm water. Take out the softener insert and the siphon tube, wash in warm water and clean the siphon tube. Clean the siphon especially thoroughly after repeated use of liquid starch. Remove residue in the drawer housing with a bottle brush.
Check the filter at the free end of the inlet hose every 6 months (more often if the water supply is erratic). Close the tap, unscrew the hose, remove the rubber seal, pull out the plastic mesh 2 with pliers, clean it, refit in reverse order and screw the hose on tightly.
Where the data comes from
- Operating instructions Miele W 604 (RU, copy from a service site), p. 10-38 (номера страниц в данных совпадают с печатными) (manual archive)
Assumptions
- Electronic control (Novotronic): the programme selector does not turn during the wash; the panel indicators show the stage. So cycle.dialMoves=false and positions in cycle.steps select the programme rather than a timer step.
- Step durations are estimates (cycle.estimate=true): the manual gives no programme times, water or energy figures. The number of rinses comes from the table on p. 23 (minimum values; an extra cycle is possible per the footnotes for Cotton/Linen and Synthetics/Automatic).
- This is a top loader ("lid on top"): the drum parks with its opening up. The drawer is described on p. 16; the order of compartments is not given in the text and I, II, flower is assumed from the usual Miele layout.
- Selector angles come from the panel drawing on p. 10, approximate (0 = 12 o'clock, clockwise). The Spin button is shown as a conceptual dial at 60 degree steps, the angles are not real.
- The function button (Soak, Prewash, Short) is one physical button with three indicators; in the data it is three separate buttons and only one can be on at a time.
- Maximum loads and spin speeds per programme come from the tables on p. 20-22.
- Years are approximate: the manual gives none.
- Panel colours are approximate, from the drawing.
Not in the manual
- No programme times and no water or energy consumption.
- The order of the drawer compartments is not described in the text.
- Programmable functions (soak duration, four "More water" levels) are described in a chapter that was not read.
- The maximum temperature for some special programmes comes from the panel mark only.
- The "Technical data" and "Installation" sections were not read.
Time is an estimate from the timer steps and heater power: heating 12 l of water from 15 °C to the selected temperature with a 2000 W (not stated in the manual, typical value used) heater. Real time depends on tap water temperature, load and mains voltage.
