4. Detergent drawer
Front view, left to right. Highlighted compartments are the ones the machine takes detergent from on this programme.
The drawer pulls out towards you; depending on the model it has three or four compartments. The left-to-right order is not shown in the drawing and is assumed. Liquid detergent for the main wash: take out the coloured insert and put it into compartment II (the graduated scale helps with dosing). For highly concentrated powders and liquids use the dosing ball placed straight into the drum.
Tap a row to set that programme on the panel.

- Power button On/Off — Button A "On/Off": switches the machine on and starts the chosen programme. The indicator lamp lights. Pressing it again pauses the programme, once more it continues. To change the programme press it, choose the new programme and press it again.
- Button Eco — Saves energy: the wash takes longer at a reduced temperature. Allowed with programmes 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7. Not together with Quick.
- Button Quick — Fast economical wash for a small amount of lightly soiled laundry. Allowed with programmes 4 (cotton up to 3 kg, 60 C max) and 6 (synthetics up to 1.5 kg, 60 C max). Not together with Eco.
- Button Anti-crease — The laundry stays in the water of the last rinse and is not spun, so it does not crease. Allowed with programmes 1-10 and A. To continue press the button again: the laundry will be spun as set; if you do not need to spin, turn the programme selector to drain. With programmes 9 and 10 do not leave laundry soaking for long.
- Lamp — Indicator B: lit while the machine is on.
- Spin knob об/мин — Spin speed: 800 rpm maximum. If "0" is chosen, the final spin is skipped and only draining happens. Intermediate marks are illegible on the panel photo and are not in the data. On some programmes the machine limits the top speed itself to make ironing easier.
- Temperature knob °C — Wash temperature; set it no higher than the programme maximum in the table (a short list is printed on the panel). Cold water: heated only up to 20 C. The marks are derived from the programme table.
- Programme knob P — Programme selection. After the start the selector turns clockwise by itself through the stages: prewash, main wash, rinse, spin; each stage takes from a few seconds to a few minutes. The Stop position is used to stop the programme. To choose another programme switch the machine off first. The manual has no drawing of the knob: order and angles are placeholders.
The machine does not switch on and no lamp is lit
- Check that the machine is connected to the mains.
- Check that the socket works (with a desk lamp or similar).
- Check that the On/Off button is pressed.
Manual, p. 79
The machine does not start but the On/Off lamp is lit
- Whether the door is closed firmly (child safety device).
- Whether the programme is set and has been started.
- Whether the water tap is open; if not, open it, switch off and on again.
Manual, p. 79
The machine stops during the programme
- The "Rinse hold" button may be pressed; cancel the function by pressing it again.
- The On/Off lamp is not lit: press the On/Off button.
Manual, p. 79
No or insufficient water supply
- The tap is fully open.
- The hose has no kinks.
- The condition of the filter in the inlet hose.
- The water in the hose is not frozen.
- Then switch the machine off and on again.
Manual, p. 79
The waste water is not pumped out
- The position of the drain hose.
- The condition of the filter.
- The water in the drain hose is not frozen.
- The "Rinse hold" button is not pressed.
Manual, p. 79
Detergent and additives are left in the drawer at the end of the wash
- The siphon is installed and clean (see "Care and maintenance").
- Enough water is supplied: the mesh filters between the inlet hose and the tap may be clogged.
- Check and clean the filter two or three times a year.
Manual, p. 79
The machine vibrates during spinning
- The machine is level and stable on all four feet.
- The transport bolts have been removed (they must be taken out before use).
Manual, p. 79
Water-stop function fault (depending on the model)
- The function engages when a water leak is detected: the pump runs continuously.
- Causes: too much foam, or a leak in the inlet hose or in the machine itself.
- Switch the machine off, unplug it and close the tap; carefully tilt the machine forward so that the water runs out.
Manual, p. 79
Unsatisfactory spin results
- The imbalance detection system may reduce the spin speed or stop the cycle if the machine holds only heavy items (bath mat, bathrobe): add small items and repeat the spin.
- Excessive foam can prevent spinning: use the correct amount of detergent.
- The programme stops after a few minutes if there is no water supply or the pump is clogged.
Manual, p. 80

Switch the machine off and unplug it. Take the coloured insert out of the drawer and use it to open the filter cover, put a basin underneath. Slowly turn the filter anticlockwise until the clamp is vertical and wait for the water to run out. Then take the filter out, remove foreign objects, check that the pump impeller turns freely, insert the filter and screw it in clockwise as far as it goes (clamp horizontal), close the cover. Pour 0.5 L of water into the dispenser to restore the Eco System. Make sure the water has cooled before draining.
Drain the water as in "Removing the filter". To drain the remainder from the pump, tilt the machine forward. Needed before moving the machine and where the temperature can fall below zero (after every wash).
Release the drawer by pressing the lever in the prewash compartment and take it out. Take out the inserts: the siphon from the softener compartment, the insert for liquid detergent and the siphon from the chlorine bleach compartment (if there are four compartments). Wash all parts under running water, put them back and press the siphon so that it returns to its original position.
Wipe with a damp cloth when necessary and check periodically for foreign objects.
Use ordinary household detergents, no abrasives or solvents; wipe dry with a soft cloth.
Check and clean periodically: close the tap, unscrew the hose from the tap, clean the inner filter; on machines with a straight hose the filter can be removed with pliers at the machine end. Then screw the hose on tightly and check for leaks.
Where the data comes from
- Whirlpool AWM 5085: user manual (RU, 18 pp.), scan on McGrp, p. 1-14 (печатные с. 67-80) (manual archive)
- Whirlpool AWM 5085: programme table and data sheet (RU), scan on McGrp, p. 1-2 (manual archive)
Assumptions
- The manual has no drawing of the programme selector. The order of positions is assumed to be Stop, 1-10, then A-D in ascending order, with placeholder angles. The Stop position is confirmed only by the manual text.
- The temperature selector marks (cold, 30, 40, 60, 95) are derived from the programme table; the 50 C mark and intermediate values are not shown. The spin selector marks (0 and 800) are also derived from the table and text; intermediate marks on the panel photo are illegible.
- The left-to-right order of the drawer compartments (I, II, bleach, flower) is assumed: the manual photo is an angled view.
- Production years are estimated from the dates in the service headers of the manual files (January 2001, November 2002).
- Heater power is not stated, so the engine default (2000 W) is used. The main-wash water volume (14 L) is estimated from the total water consumption of 49 L.
- The programme durations from the consumption table (data sheet, page 2) are for the variant without prewash at the stated temperature; prewash adds about 15 minutes. For programmes 1, 2, 3 no separate duration is given in the table (so none is in the data).
- Step durations in the cycle are estimates from the total times in the consumption table; the stages inside the cycle and their position on the selector scale are not shown in the manual.
- The "Eco" function has no special effect on time in the calculation: the manual only says the wash takes longer at a lower temperature.
Not in the manual
- There is no drawing of the programme selector scale: the order of positions, the Stop position and the placement of stages on the scale are unknown.
- The marks of the temperature and spin selectors between the extreme values are not given.
- The consumption table has durations only for cotton (95/60/40 C), synthetics (60/40 C), delicates, wool and silk; for programmes 2, 3, 5, 7 and A-D no duration is given.
- Heater power and per-programme maximum spin are not stated (the table gives 800 for all wash programmes).
- The "Delay start" function is described "depending on the model", but the AWM 5085 panel has no delay button; it is not included in the data.
- The left-to-right order of the drawer compartments is not shown in the drawing.
Time is an estimate from the timer steps and heater power: heating 14 l of water from 15 °C to the selected temperature with a 2000 W (not stated in the manual, typical value used) heater. Real time depends on tap water temperature, load and mains voltage.
